Mid-day Supervisor Training

Target Audience
Midday Supervisors

Overview
The central training programme always begins with establishing a safe environment in which to work, one in which problems can be discussed and solutions can hopefully be found. The needs of the individual schools are taken on board and the training tailored to their requirements. There is plenty of opportunity for sharing good practice between the schools that are attending.

Firstly, the complex job of the Midday Supervisor is discussed, which brings a positive start to the session as the multitude of skills required to perform in the job is celebrated.

Key issues affecting lunchtimes are discussed and explored, aiming to make the job more manageable and effective. The behaviour policy in school is discussed, and the use of positive language, rewards and sanctions examined, with the aim of raising the profile of the Midday Supervisors through effective behaviour management. The organisation of the playground is assessed, and ideas for improvement discussed, and particularly for encouraging active playtimes by organising games and zoning areas of the playground.

The session also looks at ways of improving communication within the school, giving practical examples of how the whole school staff can work together to improve lunchtimes. The training is broken up with practical examples of circle games and brain gym exercises that can be helpful to the Midday Supervisor, and ideas and techniques that can help with gaining children’s attention in a positive way are discussed.

The Midday Supervisors are given a training pack and awarded a certificate from Health Promoting Schools on completion of the training.
