The glass is half empty is often reflected in our planning and delivery of PSHE. We assume the worst of our primary and secondary pupils rather than checking out the truth about their behaviours. Interestingly, the research indicates they do too! “PSHE is much more likely to be successful if it starts with positive beliefs in children and young people, and their desire to be healthy. Emphasising positive social norms from the outset presents an exciting new approach to delivering PSHE”. From Positive Approaches on Aspects of Personal, Social and Health Education by De Silva and Blake NCB 2006 Normative Education is potentially a revolutionary tool for primary and secondary PSHE that emphasises the positive. The course will use active learning techniques and a wide range of local data to communicate the theory and practice of the normative approach. Participants will come away with an understanding of normative education and how to apply it in their classrooms and their communities. Course Contents • Some free resources to help you implement normative education. • Experience exciting ways of transmitting data to pupils in order to generate discussion. • A look at local and recent data generated from primary and secondary schools and their classroom staff. • How to implement a normative approach in your community including the use of the media. • Active ways of exploring the theory of normative education.
