Opening Hearts

Who am I?
What makes me?
The things I hide?
Or the things you see?

From What Makes Me?

Target Audience
Senior/experienced staff in school who have the ability to drive this initiative forward.
Overview
The above verse is from one of the poems written for the exciting range of materials written for this new and different approach to challenging homophobia in primary schools.

The Derbyshire Health Promoting schools team has been funded by the National Healthy Schools programme to address this issue.

Working with a trainer and writer, a set of literacy materials (covering many genres from within the literacy strategy) from Foundation through to Year 6, has been developed alongside a training package for school staff teams.  This supports the exploration of issues which might be raised when taking a whole school approach to challenging the notion that homophobia exists in primary schools, and that work on such issues should be developed within the primary sector.

A working party of seven primary schools has overseen the development and trial of all the materials.  The whole process has been evaluated by Max Biddulph from the University of Nottingham.
