About The National PSHE CPD Programme

The National PSHE CPD programme is designed primarily for teachers and community nurses who are actively engaged in the delivery of a planned
programme of PSHE in schools and other settings.

The Aims of the Programme
The National PSHE CPD programme provides a valuable opportunity for teachers and community nurses to develop their skills in the delivery of PSHE in schools and other settings.

It aims to:
Improve the competence and confidence of those delivering PSHE.
Raise the quality of teaching and learning in PSHE.
Enable participants to effect positive change in PSHE planning, delivery and development within their settings.
Contribute to wider Government initiatives, in particular the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, Drug Strategy and ‘Every Child Matters’.

What is involved?
Participants will enhance their knowledge and skills, and use nationally agreed standards to evaluate professional practice. The evidence is collated in a portfolio which is independently assessed against the standards and programme criteria. Formative assessment is given at an interim stage.

How will this benefit me?
Completion of the programme will contribute effectively to continuing professional development:
As part of your individual development objectives.
Provide accreditation for successful participants that can be used towards gaining higher qualifications.
To support teachers in their application for further professional qualifications, such as DfES Threshold Assessment, Advanced Skills Teacher Status (AST), National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH).
To enable nurses to demonstrate evidence of how their practice meets the requirements of the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF).
To provide support to participants who wish to explore further qualifications.

National Standards:
Participants must provide evidence to meet the standards, reflecting the breadth of aspects of PSHE.

During the year participants will use nationally agreed standards to evaluate and develop their own practice and identify areas for professional and institutional development.  They will collect and reflect on evidence of this good practice and their achievements in a portfolio which is independently assessed against the national standards and learning outcomes.

Dimension A refers to the context and core skills of teaching and managing children and young people’s learning in PSHE. Participants must provide evidence to meet the standards.

Dimension B is an extension module which relates to the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, and their application in the teaching of SRE or Drug Education or Emotional Health and Well Being. The number of standards covered within Dimension B is dependent upon the professional background of the participant.

Assessment
Assessment will comprise of two elements:

1. A portfolio of evidence which demonstrates that national standards have been met, assessed by an approved national assessor.

2. Demonstration that participants have satisfactorily met the criteria for two lesson or session observations.

The portfolio will need to include:

 Contextual statement.
 Reflection on personal values.
 Reflection on difference and diversity.
Evidence trails, including lesson/session observations, children and young people’s work, assessments and evaluations.
Head teacher’s or line manager’s supporting statement.
Reflection on observed lessons/sessions and self critique with reference to future teaching and learning.
