Target Audience Secondary curriculum managers or classroom practitioners Overview This course was put on the programme to reflect that most PSHE training is about sex and relationships education or drugs education. This does not really reflect the breadth of PSHE. Since first advertising this course, the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has re-named PSHE as Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education, thus making this course even more pertinent. Money management, enterprise and the economic impact of financial hardship have all moved up the agenda. Done creatively these subjects can be real, exciting and effective. Schools are also increasingly being asked to have an awareness of body image, eating disorders and mental wellbeing. How should this impact on teaching? Much of the QCA guidance indicates that PSHE should develop, and use social skills to deliver the curriculum. Active learning also enables pupils to access more of the curriculum. Do we spend enough time enhancing these skills? How do we improve them? Other Details Please wear comfortable clothes for movement. Course Outline Creative and practical approaches will be explored and experienced. Strategies for needs assessment and assessment will be modelled throughout (recently highlighted by OFSTED as the weakest parts of PSHE delivery.) Learning Outcome The facilitators on this course will work with you on developing: • An understanding of the breadth of PSHE. • The understanding needed by adults to deliver these issues. • An active and creative approach to all areas. • The social skills of pupils. • A practical experience of needs assessment and assessment techniques/strategies. • Resources to use in school.
