Sex and Relationship Education at KS2: Policy Development and Consultation


Target Audience
Key Stage 2 PSHE Co-ordinators, Governors and Head Teachers

Overview
This course will look at the aims and purpose of SRE at Key Stage 2 and what it consists of.  We will look at how to develop a policy and scheme of work that meets the needs of pupils and that all stakeholders (school staff, teachers, parents, governors and pupils) have confidence in.  We will explore a range of tried and tested consultation methods.

Dress in comfortable clothes for movement.

Course Outline
 What is SRE at Key Stage Two? Looking at cultural influences on children and young people regarding SRE.
 Creating a curriculum. Exploring the’ age appropriate’ knowledge, skills and attitudes that need to be addressed.
 Exploring resources. We will look at a range of resources and activities for use in the classroom.
 Whole school approach- consulting all stakeholders. How to support parents in this area of their child’s development.
 Sensitive issues- what questions do children ask? How do we respond? SRE in the ethos of the school.

Learning Outcome
 Participants will leave with a developed understanding of the legal requirement for an SRE policy at KS2 and a thorough model of an effective policy development process.
 They will have reflected on children’s needs and how to development a meaningful and relevant curriculum. 
 They will have explored Ofsted recommendations for outcomes in SRE and viewed a range of up to date age appropriate resources.
