Derbyshire Wide HPS Training Courses


The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) team provide a range of courses that will help support the development of most aspects of the Health Promoting Schools work in schools.  Exceptions to this are drug education courses that are advertised through the Local Authority’s Course and Conference programme as these are organised by Ali Hill, Drug Education Consultant.

Active and Democratic Classroom
Two day course for primary school staff who would like to develop an active and democratic learning culture.

Active Learning in SRE at KS2
This course aims to develop teacher confidence in delivering SRE safely through exploring and experiencing a range of active learning methods.

Active Learning Techniques in PSHE in Secondary Schools
The course aims to make the planning and delivery of PSHE more exciting for you and to refresh those needing some new ideas and energy.

Assessment in PSHE
During this one day introductory course participants will explore what is meant by assessment in PSHE, some methods of assessment and a chance to share good practice.

Developing Confidence in Secondary SRE for Tutors
This course will raise form tutors awareness of SRE and develop skills to deliver SRE confidently. 

Difference and Diversity in Derbyshire Schools
The programme offers participants the opportunity to explore their own attitudes and values towards difference and diversity as well as identifying teaching strategies for working with pupils.

Emotional Health and Wellbeing in PSHE
The course will aim to define emotional health and well-being and will cover a broad range of issues such as self awareness, managing stress, bullying and rights and responsibilities.

Healthy Eating in Primary Schools
Learn about the School Food Standards and their impact on food in your school, experience practical approaches to healthy eating education and how to utilise your school council for whole school changes.

Let's leave it till later (Secondary SRE)
Delay is a secondary training course in SRE adapting materials from Jo Adams ‘Let’s leave it till later’ manual.

Mid-day Supervisor Training
Ideally for 2 MDS from each school.  We will explore ways in to make lunchtimes happier and healthier, look at positive behaviour management and conflict resolution and reflect on your school practice and areas for development.

National PSHE CPD Programme
The National PSHE CPD programme provides a valuable opportunity for teachers and community nurses to develop their skills in the delivery of PSHE in schools and other settings.  This is a full academic year course.

Normative Education
The course will use active learning techniques and a wide range of local data to communicate the theory and practice of the normative approach.

Opening Hearts: Challenging Homophobic Bullying in Primary Schools
The training will include exploring attitudes and values as well as practical approaches to tackling homophobic bullying in primary schools.

Peer Buddy Train the Trainer
This course is for teachers who wish to provide their own peer buddy training (primary and secondary). 

PSHE Curriculum Development
PSHE should be at the heart of the school curriculum.  This day will give an opportunity for teachers to think, share and hopefully learn about how that can be achieved in your school situation. 

PSHE is More Than Sex and Drugs (Primary)
This course will look at those parts of the PSHE curriculum often neglected in training such as economics, healthy eating and physical activity.

This course will look at those parts of the PSHE curriculum often neglected in training such as economics, healthy eating and physical activity.

Puppets in Practice
This course will provide you with imaginative ways of using puppets in the classroom. 

Safe for All: Challenging Homophobia in Secondary Schools
This training will include exploring attitudes and values as well as practical approaches to tackling homophobic bullying in secondary schools. 

SRE in Infant Schools: Policy Development and Consultation
This course examines how SRE at infant school lays the foundations for healthy friendships and relationships, and a healthy attitude towards ourselves, our bodies and each other.

SRE at KS2: Policy Development and Consultation
This course will look at the aims and purpose of SRE at Key Stage 2 and what it consists of.  We will be look at how to develop a policy and scheme of work that meets the needs of pupils and that all stakeholders- school staff, teachers, parents, governors and pupils have confidence in. 

Staff Health & Wellbeing
This course will explore the many ways in which staff health and well-being can be promoted.  The course will provide participants with a relaxing day and some ideas to facilitate health and well- being within the school.
