About Derbyshire Healthy Schools
Derbyshire Healthy Schools has been in existence since 1994 and since the development of the National Healthy Schools Programme in 1999 it has become the delivery agent for the national programme. Whilst we deliver some locally based initiatives the Derbyshire programme is mostly concerned with supporting schools in achieving National Healthy School Status.
The aims of the National Healthy Schools Programme are:
• to support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours;• to raise pupil achievement;• to promote social inclusion;• to reduce health inequalities;
In Derbyshire we encourage schools to recognise the strengths of their existing practice and enable and support them to set their own objectives within the National Healthy Schools framework, whilst acknowledging the uniqueness of each school’s situation. Emphasis is also placed on the sharing of experience, good practice and different approaches.
As with the National Programme we view health in its widest sense, encompassing physical, mental and social well-being and the impact this has on quality of life.
This is reflected by the four core themes of the National Award:
• Personal, Social and Health Education (including sex and relationship education and drug education).• Healthy Eating.• Physical Activity.• Emotional Health & Well-being.
The impact of the programme is based on a whole school approach to development and improvement that consults with and encourages the participation of the whole school community including children and young people, parents and all school based staff
