Buddies, Mentors and Mediators

Infant Buddy Training at Buxton
This training programme enables children and young people to support others in school. At Key Stages One and Two, the job of buddy focuses on issues in the playground, including organisation of games to support children who may be lonely, and the resolution of low-level conflict. The secondary school training focuses on the skill of listening so that the mentors can provide support to other students.

Training can be delivered to students, at all Key stages at various levels, by members of the team in the school setting. The buddy training at Key Stage One lasts half a day, and this extends to two full days for the later Key Stages.

The team have also developed a ‘Train the Trainer‘ course, where teachers interested in delivering this programme in school can develop their own skills

The training for buddies/ mentors and mediators covers the following objectives:

Assessment of children/ young people’s own emotions and behaviour to support the development of  their skills in supporting others
 Development of co-operation skills
Development of skills and qualities required for the role
 Improving listening and questioning skills
Dealing with difficult issues and learning how to incorporate child protection understanding
How to set up a scheme in school
