Funding for Schools                   


Searching for grants and funding

Schools may have a specific project in mind relating to health promoting schools, that needs some funding e.g. developing the playground, increasing extra curricular activities, developing children’s resources, developing social inclusion/ children’s voices etc. This section will give a guide to funding relating to the 4 themed areas.

Funding organisations below have been listed in relation to their theme and are applicable to schools throughout Derbyshire. There will also be other local funding opportunities such as grants from your local district council, local companies such as supermarkets, car manufacturers, banks, airports etc which will all offer some sort of small grant scheme.

Reaching communities is an exciting England wide programme that will provide funding to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need, you will need to show there is a need for your project, how your project provides a solution to that need and how your community will be involved.

Derbyshire Community Foundation offer many different forms of funding. The one of most interest to schools is ‘Local network Fund’ – contact Sarah Hand – The schools parent, teachers association would need to apply.
Min grant: £250  Max grant: £7000

Funding priorities:
To tackle disadvantage and poverty across the whole of Derbyshire by giving local groups the chance to make a difference to the lives of children and young people aged 0 – 19 years old.
Grants are available to support the following themes: Children’s Voices; Economic Disadvantage; isolation and Access; Aspirations and Experience.

The Foundation concentrates on issues of inequality through arts and education, particularly in relation to young people.

Funding priorities:
You will need to demonstrate that your project will improve your local environment in some way. For example, you might be planning to: create a community garden or an allotment or plan an arts project using recycled materials that promotes healthy eating.

‘Let’s Get Cooking’

Funding: £2500 over 3 years

Funding priorities:
From January 2008, the School Food Trust aims to roll-out the ‘let’s get cooking’ programme across the East Midlands. The programme will give £2500 to fund the start up and running costs of a cooking club in schools over 3 years. Schools need to register their interest on the website above which gives details of eligibility.

Funding priotities:
Put into place a new generation of modern facilities in parks, local leagues and schools; provide capital/ revenue support to increase participation in grass roots football; strengthen the links between football and the community and to harness its potential for good in society.

Funding priority
Projects that increase the number of people that play sport, coach sport or volunteer in sport, multisport projects that target under represented groups ie women and girls, people with disabilities, people from black and ethnic minorities, people over 45 and people from deprived communities; projects that develop new strong partnerships; projects that meet local needs; projects that help to create a strong sports system.

Funding priorities:
The fund will give small grants to fund projects and activities that directly lead to people taking part in sustained physical activity. The aim of the fund is to help remove the “barriers” which stop people being active.

Funding priorities:
You will need to demonstrate that your project will improve your local environment in some way. For example, you might be planning to: create a community garden; set up a local recycling scheme; produce a newspaper about your local environment; carry out research on a local environmental issue; publish a walks map of your area; run an arts project which uses recycled materials; set up and run a "walk to school" club.

Derbyshire Aggregates Levy Grant Scheme (DALGS)

Schools parents teacher association can apply. Closing dates for application is April annually.
Min grant: Not given  max grant : £50,000

Funding priorities:
To qualify applicants must be able to show that extraction of aggregates subject to the tax has had an adverse impact on their area. They also need to show that their project will benefit the local community.

Funding priorities, there are several themes, but the one that relates to playgrounds is:
Environmental Projects within the immediate locality
Egs of projects, which might attract SEEDS assistance include: improving the school grounds by planting trees, developing a wildlife; garden, siting bird/bat boxes, creating a pond, etc; producing a natural or local history guide to the area; running a drama/art project with an environmental theme.

Grants available to engage young people with the environment with particular emphasis on linking this with the curriculum especially numeracy and literacy.

Funding Priorities:
This programme is designed for organisations that work with people aged 13 to 20 (or 13 to 25 for young people with special needs) Your project must show how young people are managing and participating in the project. Your project needs to related to the local and culturally varied heritage of the UK. For example, it could involve young people researching a local archive or doing practical casework on a nature reserve. You will need to be able to show your project is delivered by a partnership. Youth groups must work with at least one heritage partner to deliver the project, (eg your local wildlife trust or museum).
