Midday Supervisor Training

Training with Midday Supervisors For Happy, Healthy Lunchtimes

Derbyshire Health Promoting Schools Team have developed a training programme for working with Midday Supervisors based on the needs of schools working towards the Health Promoting Schools Award.

The training programme can be delivered in a half or full day programme, depending on the needs of the individual school. The training always begins with setting a safe environment in which to work in, one in which problems can be discussed and solutions aimed to be found. The needs of the individuals within the team are taken on board and the training tailored to their requirements.

Firstly, the complex job of the Midday Supervisor is discussed, which brings a positive start to the session as the multitude of skills required to assist in the job is celebrated.

Key issues affecting lunchtimes are discussed and explored aiming to make the job more manageable and effective. The behaviour policy in school is discussed and the use of positive language, rewards and sanctions examined, raising the profile of the Midday Supervisors with effective behaviour management. The organisation of the playground is assessed and ideas for improvement discussed, particularly encouraging active playtimes with organising games and zoning areas of the playground.

The session also looks at ways of improving communication within school, giving practical examples of how the whole school staff can work together to improve lunchtimes. The training is broken up with practical examples of circle games and brain gym exercises that can be helpful in the role of the Midday Supervisor and ideas and techniques to help with gaining children’s attention in a positive way. The team members delivering the training arrange a meeting with the Headteacher following on from delivery to feedback any issues and ideas for improvement of lunchtimes.

The Midday Supervisors are awarded a certificate from Health Promoting Schools on completion of the training.
