National Healthy Schools Outcomes for Healthy Eating

Once your school has self validated, your school will then be asked to provide two outcomes for each theme, one quantitative outcome and one qualitative outcome. These outcomes will provide a measure of the impact healthy schools has had on your school. New outcomes will also need to be provided each time your school is re-validated every three years.

Collecting Data
It is important to start thinking about the outcomes at the beginning of your healthy schools progress, particularly with regards to the quantitative outcome which measures a percentage increase or decrease. In this case a baseline measure is needed before any programme starts and the same measure taken once the programme has finished giving evidence of either an increase or decrease as required.
Most schools collect a huge amount of data already. In the case of Healthy Eating data such as monitoring food waste at lunch times, monitoring uptake of school meals, food choices, lunchbox content and school tuck shop can all contribute to quantitative measures. Reported qualitative outcomes can be measured by pupil/ parent/ staff questionnaire or by interviewing a focus group.

How do the outcomes relate to validation?
Your outcomes will be the areas that are moderated should your school be one of the 10% that get randomly moderated following self validation. The moderators will choose just one outcome (from any theme), plus the school chooses one outcome (from any theme) and only these two outcomes will be moderated. Therefore it is important to measure outcomes that demonstrate your schools strengths and that your school has readily available evidence.
