Tips for Effective use of Theatre in Health Education in Schools

Many schools receive approaches from companies or bodies wishing to deliver Theatre in Health Education (TIHE) either for free or with a charge. As with all external contributors various measures need to take place to ensure a successful and effective delivery.

Please click this link to download the External Contributors Policy. This policy has separate guidance for TIHE in secondary schools.

General Principles for schools considering using a piece of TIHE are:

§ Be clear about the desired learning outcomes before deciding who is best able to help achieve them.

§ Ensure the external contribution is integrated into the school’s programme, rather than being an isolated event.

§ Ensure that the external contributors/ theatre company are competent educators and facilitators (check references carefully).

§ Where possible, involve pupils in preparatory and follow-up work.

§ Ensure that the content is planned/known, to ensure that it meets the needs of pupils and is consistent with school policy, curriculum & ethos.

§ Ensure that all external contributors are aware of appropriate school policies.

§ Ensure that the school is fully aware of the theatre company’s aims & objectives for delivering to the school.

§ Ensure that all external contributors are aware of their roles, responsibilities & boundaries, i.e., that they work to the professional boundaries of the teacher when taking part in the curriculum.

§ Assess the value of the external contribution through appropriate feedback & evaluation. This information should be shared & used to inform future work.
