Derbyshire Wide Healthy Schools Training Courses


Derbyshire Healthy Schools (DHS) team provide a range of courses that will help support the development of most aspects of the Healthy Schools work in schools.  Exceptions to this are drug education courses that are advertised through the Local Authority’s Course and Conference programme as these are organised by Ali Hill, Drug Education Consultant.

Active and Democratic Classroom (Primary)
Two day course for primary school staff who would like to develop an active and democratic learning culture. 

Assessment in PSHE (All key stages)
During this one day introductory course participants will explore what is meant by assessment in PSHE, some methods of assessment and a chance to share good practice.

Buddy and Peer Listening (All key stages)
Participants will gain a practical understanding of the value of having a Peer Support scheme in their school and will have the confidence to set one up.

Dealing with Loss and Bereavement in School
This course aims to increase participants awareness of the issues surrounding bereavement and young people and to
help participants feel more confident about supporting bereaved young people and their parents or carers.

Developing Sex and Relationship Education Classroom Practice at KS2
Through this course participants will have the opportunity to increase their understanding and confidence of the content and delivery of SRE at Key Stage 2.  Information and examples of the range of resources available for deliverying SRE will also be provided.

Difference and Diversity in Derbyshire Schools (All key stages)
This course is day 3 of the National PSHE CPD Programme. The programme offers participants the opportunity to explore their own attitudes and values towards difference and diversity as well as identifying teaching strategies for working with pupils. 

Drugs and Vulnerable Young People
This course provides opportunities to extend understanding of targeted drug education and to develop skills in delivering targeted drug education.

Emotional Health and Wellbeing in PSHE

The course will aim to define emotional health and well-being and will cover a broad range of issues such as self awareness, managing stress, bullying and rights and responsibilities.

Enhancing Science with Sex and Relationship Education (Secondary)
A new course aimed to help participants develop the delivery of sex education in science through activities that are designed to help delegates gain more experience, confidence and knowledge.

Exploring Good Practice in Drug Education - Primary
Ways of extending and enhancing good practice in drug education will be explored by investigating aims, policies, teaching methods and assessment.

Exploring Good Practice in Drug Education - Secondary
Ways of extending and enhancing good practice in drug education will be explored by investigating aims, policies, teaching methods and assessment within the new secondary PSH&EE framework.

Food: How to keep it Safe and Healthy
Learn about the basic healthy eating messages and food hygiene in line with current government guidelines and school food trust legislation.  Fun and practical methods of getting these messages across to children and adults.

Food Safety in the Classroom
A shortened and more school relevant basic food hygiene course has been created for in school training.

Let's leave it till later (Secondary SRE)
Delay is a secondary training course in SRE adapting materials from Jo Adams ‘Let’s leave it till later’ manual.

Mid-day Supervisor Training
Ideally for 2 MDS from each school.  We will explore ways in to make lunchtimes happier and healthier, look at positive behaviour management and conflict resolution and reflect on your school practice and areas for development.

Opening Hearts: Challenging Homophobic Bullying in Primary Schools
The training will include exploring attitudes and values as well as practical approaches to tackling homophobic bullying in primary schools.

Puppets in Practice
This course will provide you with imaginative ways of using puppets in the classroom. 

Respect My Space - A year 6 and 7 project
Participants will increase their understanding of gender based bullying and sexual harassment and the school policy implications.  The course aims to empower participants with the confidence and skills to deal with related incidents and issues in the school environment as well as helping to deliver this curriculum unit. 

Safe for All: Challenging Homophobia in Secondary Schools
This training will include exploring attitudes and values as well as practical approaches to tackling homophobic bullying in secondary schools. 

Sex and Relationship Education - Policy Development and Consultation (Primary)
Supports the development of a policy and scheme of work for SRE.

Staff Health & Wellbeing

This course will explore the many ways in which staff health and well-being can be promoted.  The course will provide participants with a relaxing day and some ideas to facilitate health and well- being within the school.

What's It All About? Exploring the New Secondary PSH&EE Curriculum
Guidance on the new curriculum including resources.  Participants will examine the DHS framework for PSHE&E which is referenced to Citizenship and secondary SEAL.
